GAME DAY BLOG: CGY vs. DET 27.11.09

THIRD PERIOD ACTION (3-0 CGY)

MILESTONE NIGHT: Iginla earned his 450th and 451st career assists - he's now just 12 helpers away from passing Theoren Fleury for 2nd place on the Flames all-time assist leaders list.

KEEPING THE CAPTAIN IN CHECK: Despite playing some great games against the Wings, Iginla has not scored against Detroit since Mar. 3, 2004 - that's 18 regular season games.

KIPPER'S A KEEPER: Kiprusoff earned himself his second shutout of the season, making a season-high 40 saves. It's his 32nd in his career.

GOALS: Jokinen (4) from Lundmark (2) and Iginla (9) at 0:25

SECOND PERIOD ACTION (2-0 CGY)

SHARP SAVE: Kiprusoff has been busy all night but made his best save just over 5:00 into the second stanza. Speedy Darren Helm cut past the defenders and wired a tricky shot at the Finnish netminder but Kiprusoff got himself in position to keep the Wings off the scoreboard.

FACTOID: The Flames and Red Wings have identical records against each other: 59-59-18.

PK EXCELLENCE: The Flames don't appear to happy that the Wings are getting away with plays that they've been called on but they've been able to weather the Wings power play storm thanks to Kiprusoff's excellent play.

FIRST PERIOD ACTION (2-0 CGY)

LOVING THE JOE LOU: In his 27 games with the Flames last season, Lundmark tallied eight goals and three of those came against the Red Wings. On Mar. 12, he was the catalyst for a Flames come-from-behind effort when he potted two enroute to a 6-5 SO Calgary victory.

FAKE OUT: Former Flame Brad Stuart appeared to score on the Wings second power play but it was immediately waived by the refs due to the fact Dan Cleary was in the crease. An odd, rarely made call but the Flames will take it.

STARTING LINEUP: Miikka Kiprusoff, Dion Phaneuf, Robyn Regehr, Olli Jokinen, Jarome Iginla and Jamie Lundmark

SCRATCHES: Cory Sarich, Staffan Kronwall and Brian McGrattan

GOALS: Jamie Lundmark (1) from Jokinen (13) and Iginla (8) at 0:28

Dawes (6) from Moss (5) at 18:29

SHOTS: CGY 6 DET 15

PENALTIES: CGY 3 DET 1

MORNING SKATE NOTES AND UPDATES

Cory Sarich did not accompany the team on the trip due to an undisclosed injury. Brent Sutter says he's day-to-day and he will be monitored on that basis.

Rene Bourque did make the trip and skated this morning but he won't be playing tonight.

"He’s getting closer every day," Sutter told the Herald this morning. "We’ll monitor it as we go along . . . to see if at some point he’s good enough to go."

PREGAME NOTES AND THOUGHTS

After a brief stop at home, the Calgary Flames embark on a six-game road trip that will see them face some of the league's best clubs and test their 7-1-3 track record away from the Pengrowth Saddledome.

First stop: Detroit.

The Flames have been playing defensively sound hockey while on the road and that's just the style needed in order to defeat the Red Wings. The boys in Motor City have been challenged offensively lately and the red light hasn't been a familiar sight for many of their top players. Five forwards (Bertuzzi, Maltby, Draper, Leino and Abdelkader) haven't scored in seven or more games and a few of their top offensive players (Franzen, Filppula and Williams) have been sidelined with injuries.

Defensively, the Wings are missing some key players as well. Niklas Kronwall (Flame Staffan Kronwall's brother) and Andreas Lilja are both on the Wings injured reserve.

The Wings are coming off a 2-0 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers. The Flames are coming off a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Winger David Moss looks at the team's win over the Coyotes on Wednesday as a springboard for this road swing.

"Before you go on a long road trip, you want to start off on a good foot. We played pretty well," he said on Wednesday night.

Game time is 5:00 p.m. MST on Rogers Sportsnet & The FAN 960.
